Dear Bodenham alumni, former teachers and friends,
It’s hard to believe it has been a year since our reunion of 2005. What a great day. We honored the Bodenham basketball program--coaches, players, cheerleaders, homecoming queens, bus drivers and others associated with the program through the years. Coaches Billy Marks, Joe T. Parker, and Bubba Parker spoke of their coaching days, teams, and honors. Their talks took us back to the “good ole days” of the outstanding basketball program of Bodenham School.
In addition to reminiscing about the past, we reached a milestone in the history of Bodenham School and community that should never be forgotten. We exceeded our goal of $100,000 for the J. Marlin Goodman Scholarship. This is quite an accomplishment for a community of our size whose school existed for only a short 50-year period. This goal was achieved with the efforts of everyone who contributed in any way and believed in this most worthwhile project. The main purpose of this letter is to say “Thanks” to all of you for your contributions. It has been an honor and a pleasure to serve as chairman of the scholarship fund and I sincerely “Thank You” for helping make this dream become a reality.
The J. Marlin Goodman Scholarship Fund has grown to $105,716 as of October 12, 2006. Six scholarships have been awarded and $13,500 has been paid to these scholarships. Additionally, $1,500 will be paid on these scholarships by year-end.
· Our most recent scholarship recipient is Megan (Alex) Golden, daughter of Tina and Jimmy Golden. She is a freshman at Martin Methodist College where she is studying elementary education.
Other recipients are doing well and progressing toward their degrees. A new recipient will be selected annually to receive a J. Marlin Goodman Scholarship worth $4,000 ($1,000 each year they attend college). Applications may be obtained from Giles County or Richland High Schools or Citizen’s Bank in Pulaski Tennessee. Applicants must pursue a career in education to be eligible.
Our website www.Bodenham.org is growing. This letter and pictures of the 2005 reunion are posted. Memorial/honor rolls are listed as well. The website costs $82.72 a year. If you would like to help support this site, you may send a $10 donation to Jewell Burns at 534 Agnew Rd., Pulaski, Tennessee. 38478.
The 2006 annual meeting for the J. Marlin Goodman Scholarship Fund will be held November 11, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at Mt. Moriah Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Since our goal of $100,000 has been reached, this letter does not come requesting contributions. However, do remember the fund is open at all times for memorial/honor gifts, or for other contributions. As mentioned above, the names will be listed on our website memorial/honor rolls.
Looking ahead, 2008 seems to be the best time to have our next Bodenham School Reunion, the anniversary of the opening of Bodenham School (80 years ago) and the closing (30 years ago). This would be a good year to remember the “good ole days” and see our friends again.
Again, thanks to you, the J. Marlin Goodman Scholarship will make an impact and a difference for years to come. May our appreciation for Mr. Goodman and the “Bodenham Spirit” live forever more.
On behalf of the Board of Directors,
October 21, 2006
Michael Burns, Chairman
